Christmas Store/White Christmas Food Baskets
Two of our church’s biggest family ministries are fast approaching and you need to be aware of some of the details and mark your calendar.
The first one is our 23rd Annual Christmas Store. For those new to the church, this ministry provides new toys for kids of families facing financial difficulties. Families who participate are referred by MISD school counselors and teachers, church members or through our Benevolence office. The toys are purchased throughout the year with budgeted funds and contributions from members, some brought in by the kids attending VBS, and others on the night of our Children’s Christmas Program which is Sunday, December 7. Our church families bring toys to be given out at the store. The store this year will be Tuesday, December 16 through Wednesday, December 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the church Activities building. Each year over 300 family members volunteer to help make the store a real blessing for over 1200 children in Midland. The greatest impact of this ministry is the 50+ professions of faith we witness every year as we make Christ known during the interview process. We have provided over 21,000 children 3 new toys apiece over this period of time. Hopefully we’ve given them a little bit of joy during Christmas.
The second major family event is our Annual White Christmas Food Basket ministry. Each year, our church assembles food baskets for approximately 300 families who otherwise wouldn’t have a traditional Christmas meal. The majority of these families are those that participate in our Christmas Store as well. The Sunday School departments are assigned specific food items to bring to the evening service on December 14 wrapped in white. The list of assigned food items can be found in the Banner. This year our distribution will be on December 16 and 17 at the Christmas store. Immediately after the Sunday night service, we set up tables in Fellowship Hall and stock them with the items our church family brought to the ingathering that night. Monday morning at 9:00 a.m., the food baskets are assembled by several volunteers. It’s quite an assembly line to witness as 300+ baskets are prepared and ready to go out the door in less than 30 minutes. The baskets are loaded in the goose-neck trailer to be distributed the following days at the store ministry. This has been a tremendous opportunity for entire families to get involved in a community mission outreach. Each basket will contain canned corn, green beans, yams, fruit, cake mix and frosting, cranberry sauce, boxed dressing, mac and cheese, jello, 5 lb. flour, 4 lb. sugar, and coffee. The church is providing a turkey with each basket. We estimate that we have provided meals for over 25,000 family members since we began the ministry.
